We arrived at Lake Champlain just before the ferry boarded, and while I got tickets Gail attempted some last minute logistics for the end of the trip. One was to change our car
rental, which didn’t work out so well. I
feel a car rental post coming on soon.
The ferry takes about an hour to cross Lake Champlain and provides
stunning views of the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains, and like every other
day of the trip the weather didn’t disappoint.
The other issue Gail addressed was to find lodging in
Burlington on move-in weekend for UVM.
Costs were high or distances were far, and though there is a campground
it didn’t seem safe to leave our stuff unattended there as we had done at all
the state parks, so we tried our luck with another hostel. It was close enough to the ferry dock that I
didn’t have to ride on my bad wheel (and no rear brakes), and though they
couldn’t answer over the phone if they had any beds, when we walked in the door
tired and sweaty they gave us two reserved for overnight staff. Guess someone must have had to sleep at the
desk that night.
It probably wasn’t the weekend to be visiting Burlington to
pass judgment on it, but I judged it pretty harshly. I’ve been describing it as Ithaca on
steroids, and none of the best features are being bulked up. We had a flight of cider that hit the spot so
I rate that worthy, but the place was either ridiculously loud or I’m too old.
On our way back to Ithaca we stopped at Maryann and Glenn’s
in Bolton Landing on Lake George for dinner. Roy and Missy were up for the weekend, as was
a friend of their kids, and except for Roy getting carried away with a knife we
had a fine visit.
